The Northern Research Institute (NORUT) is a Norwegian national research institute that conducts research in the fields of technology, innovation and social science, with projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council, European research funding bodies and other international, national and inter-regional institutions. Multidisciplinary and affiliated with the University of Tromsø, NORUT has particular expertise in Northern and Arctic regions. Working in collaboration with industry, business and the public sector, the Institute aims to produce expert research with practical applications.
Employment-related geographical mobility is a significant feature of life in Northern regions and research in this area supports NORUT’s primary goal, which is to conduct research that supports sustainable growth in the North. Attention to the intersection of development in fisheries and aquaculture with new energy industries, and attention to the consequences of worker mobility for households and communities are vital to the future prosperity of the North, and for understanding and producing knowledge on economic and social development processes.
As an international partner with On the Move, NORUT will bring a Norwegian comparative perspective to the project, providing input on employment-related geographical mobility and issues of gender, age and generational questions, ethnicity, class and sector/industrial divisions in communities. NORUT researcher Dr. Marit Aure is an international co-investigator with On the Move.
