The authors provide a basic overview of the welfare and pension income security options available to workers who are (or have been) on the move in Canada and look at the legislative frameworks and the limited academic literature that address eligibility for and practical access to income security benefits for such workers. This paper is divided into three parts: access to welfare benefits; access to public pensions (i.e. Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and the Canada and Quebec Pension Plans; and, finally, access to private pensions.
