Shingirai Mandizadza is a Sociology PhD Candidate at the University of Alberta. Her broad research interests include the political economy of rural development, land and natural resources management, resource rights and livelihoods, and gender. Shingi obtained her B.Sc. (Honours) in Sociology from the University of Zimbabwe and her M.A. in Sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Her doctoral research project aims to investigate how land is gendered and how it is central to relations of power that subordinate some women in the context of land reform programs. She believes a more nuanced understanding of gender and land politics is crucial for effective development policies in Southern Africa.
Her work with Dr. Sara Dorow for On the Move is focused on exploring the gendering of work-related mobility in the oil sands of northeast Alberta. It is aimed at unpacking the range of gendered and familial relationships that underwrite multiple scales of mobile labor in the oil sands zone and demonstrating how this range of relationships “accommodates” mobile labor in the oil industry.
