Madeline Bury has an MA in Sociology from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Honours BA in Sociology of Law from Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. Her Masters research with On the Move focused on the mobility patterns and gendered experiences of retired fish harvesters in Newfoundland. Using the tools of institutional ethnography, Madeline’s work on the South Coast of Newfoundland uncovered institutional mechanisms that result in disparities in wealth, opportunity and accreditation for individuals who retired through a particular license retirement program. She currently works on the Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey where she brings a social science perspective to the pressing problem of changing rural landscapes.
