Hannah Johnston received her PhD from the Department of Geography at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, working under the supervision of Dr. Beverley Mullings and Dr. John Holmes. Hannah researches the digital transformation of work and the collective organizing strategies of self employed workers.
After years of working as a labor organizer and academic researcher in the Pennsylvania mushroom industry, Hannah has turned her attention to the urban occupation of cab driving. Focusing on the organizing efforts of drivers in New York City, Hannah’s research concerns the spatial and legal challenges that affect the New York Taxi Workers Alliance’s ability to build a collective voice for workers
