For over 30 years and counting, the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women/Institut canadien de recherches sur les femmes (CRIAW/ICREF) has documented the economic and social situation of women in Canada through groundbreaking research. CRIAW/ICREF is partnering with On the Move through its FemNorthNet project. This Northern Communities Community University Research Alliance (CURA)-funded project supports community-engaged research on gender and restructuring in four Northern communities: La Loche, Saskatchewan; Thompson, Manitoba; and Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Labrador West, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Northern communities often experience high levels of employment-related geographical mobility and FemNorthNet has identified migration, immigration and mobility as a key research theme. Research undertaken through FemNorthNet and the On the Move Partnership will have many points of intersection, presenting many opportunities for research collaboration and mutual knowledge sharing and mobilization.
