The Economics and Statistics Branch (ESB) is a central agency of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, comprised of two separate organizations: the Economic Research and Analysis Division (ERA) and the NL Statistics Agency (NLSA). The ERA provides economic research, analysis, modeling and forecasting services for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is responsible for demographic analysis and projections. As mandated by the Statistics Agency Act, the NLSA provides a wide range of services, including the development, collection and dissemination of data under strict privacy and confidentiality requirements.
Employment-related geographical mobility is an important labour market dynamic in Newfoundland and Labrador. Historically and to varying degrees, it has been necessary for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to travel for work within and outside the province for a variety of reasons. Today, with workers moving both into and out of the province for work, labour mobility continues to be an ongoing and important aspect of the province’s society and economy. The ESB is currently initiating work to develop quality statistics on this issue. Research undertaken through the On the Move Partnership will complement this work and contribute to filling current information gaps, likewise, the work of the ESB will contribute to the research initiatives of On the Move. Better information will help inform government policies and programs and enable the ESB to monitor and analyze the impacts of employment-related mobility in Newfoundland and Labrador.
