Alberta Workers’ Health Centre

 AWHC

Since 1983 the Alberta Workers’ Health Centre (AWHC) has been helping workers with their health and safety concerns by listening to workers and providing innovative and engaging programs and services in response to their concerns. As an organization charged with listening and responding to the concerns of Alberta workers, the Centre is privy to the work stories of many peoples’ lives. These varied work stories demonstrate that workplace health and safety issues can never be separated from other employment-related issues, including labour mobility.

The AWHC is often called upon to speak for Alberta workers, including mobile workers, on issues pertaining to the impact of workplace injury and illness on themselves, their families and their communities. Research being undertaken as part of the On the Move Partnership will help inform the AWHC’s voice in this regard and contextualize individual workers’ stories. It will also assist in identifying policies and practices that contribute to the experience of workers, and inform the development of new programs for workers. The AWHC also sees On the Move as an opportunity to strengthen relationships between its organization and other organizations participating in the Partnership, including  labour organizations and university communities within Alberta and those in the home provinces of many of Alberta’s mobile workers. Kevin Flaherty, Executive Director of the Centre, sits on the On the Move Program Committee.
